I (was) about to glance through another of the books when I heard my mom call. (?)
This is another great example of 'Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it!'
Sometimes getting your questions answered winds up being the very last thing you wanted.
Which is the lie?
Being with friends? Or that everything will be okay? o_O
Friends? That's a bold assumption or bold lie. They seem 'friendly' enough on the surface, but it's that specific kind of 'friendly' that sets off lots of red flags for me.
Well, they were friends, some ten years or so ago (back when Tanya was still a baby, or at least a toddler), butt something happened that caused her mother to take off as far away as she could dragging poor Tanya with her
The mom's reaction to them suggests they had a nasty falling out over something really bad, and their treatment of her screams "manipulative gaslighter" to me. I'm hesitant to assume they were ever real friends.
Granted, people like Tanya who don't have experience with psychological abuse or manipulation might not recognize it. Plus Clarissa's actual mental illness would only make her an easier target, and easier to convince others to dismiss her concerns as well. But something about this town feels very, very wrong.
