Wouldn't it be ironic if the creature had actually been an intelligent lifeform that was just trying to make contact and warn them of a REAL danger lurking ahead?

I can't help but feel that they would have been fine if they had simply holed up in the excavator without rolling over the lake monster. I feel kinda bad for the big guy now. Afterall, he was only doing what lake monsters do: eat all humans.
Yes, and the humans were just doing what humans do: take exception to anthropophagous monsters.
