Hm, yes, how could Mom have forgotten this, and does it have something to do with her illness?

What illness? Maybe she has no illness, and the 'drug' is a memory-suppressant? Or maybe she does have an illness (natural or inflicted upon her), and they altered the formula to include the memory-suppressant to make her docile, and it just didn't take affect before she managed to grab her daughter and flee into the snow? The others didn't bother to chase her because they never felt she would last
