If it's some kind of energy cannon then it's just a big heap of metal without a working power source. But if it can shoot projectiles independently of that constriction...

That's totally not just an energy weapon, energy weapons don't need damn great stabilisers to stop one of newton's laws (recoil, every action has an equal and opposite reaction) but is it loaded but that door is definately melted, someone wanted either access to the gun or something else in the room.

Maybe someone was stuck in this room when the ship stopped working, and used the cannon to blast a hole in the door so as to escape. Then found out everything else in the ship had also stopped working, and eventually died.

Why would the colonists have such a weapon in the first place? For self-defense, or for another, more sinister purpose?

(Or maybe the NRA was one of the contributors for the colony-ship?) =D

Yes, because colonists are completely peaceful and love the entire universe, or are warmongers out to enslave the stars themselves (no room for a middle ground)
Or, maybe more likely, the weapon was in case of Space Pirates, or any number of hostiles (living and non) they might encounter during their voyage (nah, can't be that)

The NRA? Ah, you're referring to the National Raygun Association, as it is now called in this future time.

Different name. Same function.

Maybe it just fires N-Rays?

Question is: did someone attempt to break out, or break in, to that room? o_O
Depends on which way the melt is flowing on the door

Ooo, and if the map shows there should be nothing, was that room with the weapon added later? Or was it deliberately left off of the map used for the article?

Plan B for the possibility of hostile intelligent life I assume?

They didn't happen to keep secret EMP tech there, did they? (Definitely a spoiler, so no answer expected.) Earlier I assumed the planet experiences Carrington event style solar storm cycles or maybe the planet really does release EMP bursts. But someone put a hole in the wall leading to the weapons storage for a reason. The EMP affected the ship too, but if fighting broke out between a faction that wanted war with the natives and one that wanted to stop them, maybe disabling the Terran tech was an intentional sacrifice.
